Why Percy Island’s Honey is supreme
Raw honey has the highest amount of propolis, pollen and nutritional compounds, which means that it is the most beneficial choice for your health. Unfiltered honey, also known as raw honey, is generally considered to be more nutritious and have more health benefits than filtered honey because it retains more of its natural properties:
Antioxidants
Unfiltered honey contains compounds like flavonoids, phytochemicals, and vitamin C, which have antioxidant properties. Heating or pasteurizing honey can reduce or destroy these compounds.
Digestive health
Unfiltered honey contains natural enzymes that can help break down food and improve digestion.
Nutrients
Unfiltered honey contains a variety of nutrients, including around 22 amino acids and 31 minerals.
Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties
Unfiltered honey can help reduce redness and soothe inflamed skin. It can also help with sore throats and coughs.
Immune system
The bee pollen in unfiltered honey can help boost the immune system and relieve seasonal allergies.
Propolis
Unfiltered honey contains propolis, a waxy substance with antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Pollens
Unfiltered honey contains small amounts of the same pollens that cause allergic reactions, by consuming allergens
Filtered Honey V’s Strained Honey
The filtration process removes beneficial pollens, propolis, and waxes from honey, making filtered honey less nutritious. Heating honey can also destroy its natural enzymes and probiotics. By comparison, Percy Island Honey is only strained through a fine gauze to remove physically visible particles such as wax and bees.
The main difference between filtered and strained honey is the processing method and the size of the particles removed:
Filtered honey
Honey that has been processed to remove impurities like bee parts, wax, and other debris. The filtering process often involves heating the honey to make it more liquid and easier to filter. This process can kill many of the enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids in the honey. Filtered honey is usually thinner and runnier than unfiltered honey, and it tends to have a “homogenized” flavor.
Strained honey
Honey that has been strained to remove larger particles like bee parts, wax, and pollen. Strained honey is considered less processed than filtered honey because it involves no heat and removes fewer particles. Strained honey may appear hazy or cloudy, and it may crystallize more quickly than filtered honey.
Honey labeled as “raw” or “unfiltered” has usually been strained to remove hazards. However, there is little regulation on honey labeling, so it can be difficult to know for sure what the honey is. To find the least processed honey, you can look for small, artisanal honey producers who are transparent about their production processes.
Heating honey destroys its natural enzymes and probiotics. Percy Island Honey is not heated, treated or altered in any way. Percy Island Bees do all the work for us, we simply strain it, bottle it and eat it!
