A marvellous overview of the island
Thank you to Scott of Blue Peter, who took these great aerial videos and photos of Middle Percy Island during his visit in September 2018.
It’s interesting to see how well wooded the island has become since the sheep were taken off in 1964 and the ring-barking of trees for grazing stopped. Black and white photos from the Whites’ days show a stark contrast, with the grazing land for 1,500 to 2,000 sheep clearly visible from 1921 to the 1960s.
The West Bay anchorage. On the left, the A-frame and the Telephone Shed are hidden among the coconut palms, and the Tree House is nestled into the hillside overlooking the beach and anchorage.
The entrance to the tidal lagoon. There are several anchorages for boats that can sit on the sand at low tide, but please keep the entrance clear at all times.
The Percy Island Homestead, circa 1876, home to the current caretakers, resident goats, peacocks and peahens, chickens, 18 of the 30 beehives, an orchard and an organic vegetable garden.
The PIYC clubhouse, better known as “the A-frame”, at West Bay, where visitors gather, share a meal cooked on the open fire, and leave a memento.
